Nebbiolo

We have selected four clones for our first trial block to be planted on the warmer northern slope of Domain Day. This has probably been the most enjoyable background research ever - as one gets to try some of the best reds made in Italy.

Nebbiolo is the grape variety of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco regions in Italy. Our goal is to make a fleshy style, incorporating the supple cherry fruit, a rich palate and a hint of the drying tannin typical to the variety.

Making Neb is close to the ultimate challenge (after Pinot Noir and Sangiovese?) If its wrong its awful - tannic and acidic - but at its best it is savoury, seductive and silky. Watch this space!
